Herbarium Deposition and Voucher Specimen Requirements
A voucher specimen is a permanently preserved, pressed reference sample of the exact plant material used in a research study, deposited in a recognised herbarium (such as the Botanical Survey of India or an accredited regional herbarium) and assigned a unique accession number that must be cited in the resulting thesis or publication. Formal identification must be performed and certified by a qualified botanist or taxonomist, documented on institutional letterhead with the full scientific binomial (genus, species, and authority citation), family name, and local vernacular name. Collection metadata — GPS coordinates of the collection site, altitude, a photograph of the plant in its natural habitat, and the season of collection — must be recorded alongside the specimen, since geographical and seasonal variation materially affects phytoconstituent content. The 2022 edition of the Indian Pharmacopoeia formally mandates that a voucher specimen accession number be cited in every herbal raw-material monograph, and WHO guidance similarly requires that the scientific binomial, plant family, plant part used, and geographical source be fully documented before any biological activity testing begins, reflecting the field-wide consensus that authentication is a non-negotiable prerequisite to, rather than an optional adjunct of, herbal drug research.
